Hey all! Just watched a video on YouTube about the future of low emissions and thought I would quickly blog a quick summary instead of sending the link! :)There are a few different methods being utilised.
1. Carbon capture and storage - capturing the carbon before it is released and then pumping it back underground
2. Gasification - obtaining CO and H2 from coal seams to create CO2 and H2 which is then used for electricity or hydrogen fuel for cars. The waste from this process is mainly water vapour
3. Natural gas - (such as methane) wells drilled and cavities are dug in the seams where water is pumped out allowing the gas to be released from the coal. This gas and water is then pumped to the surface where they are separated. The gas is compressed and dried and used in gas fired power stations. A liquefied version of the coal is available for transport around the world.
Other ways to reduce emissions are the obvious: conserving energy in homes and businesses.
Mines are doing their part by utilising more energy efficient machines and planting trees.

mate, i work at an underground coal mine.. . . . one that u may know.. . . (NGC).. .. . and the machines arent too energy efficient and by a damn sight they sure as hell dont plant trees. .. ... . . .
Hi Anonymous,
I thought I would quickly blog to clarify my blog post was indicating that new technologies are assisting in developing energy efficient machines. These are starting to be introduced by companies.
The planting trees comment is mostly applicable to surface mining where the environment has been striped and the mine is required to replace the trees.
Two separate things addressed in one sentence; sorry for the confusion :)
