The national mining games are held every year following the new leaders conference (see previous post).
The games include events such as: surveying, mucking (filling a mining cart with gravel), drilling, face tie ins (getting a mining face ready for a blast), timber set, rail/conveyor sets, rock identifications, jigging and gold panning, and safety events. The events are assessed on speed and accuracy and are a lot of fun! Great way to hang out with uni mates and students from other uni's. Another event that is a bit more of a casual competition between the students is the boat races (beer sculling). Which is not affiliated with the formal side of the games.
